Writing a job advert that attracts the right candidates

Too many irrelevant applications, or none at all? The problem often lies in the job advert itself. A clear and attractive advert is the first step to successful recruitment.

Step 1: start from a precise job description

Before writing the advert, define the main duties, responsibilities, essential skills and those that are only desirable. This distinction avoids discouraging good candidates with an unrealistic list of requirements.

Step 2: get the title right

Use a simple job title that candidates actually search for: “Experienced Accountant” rather than an obscure internal title. Add the location and contract type.

Step 3: structure the advert

  • The company : business, values, what makes it attractive.
  • The duties : 5 to 7 concrete points.
  • The profile you are looking for : education, experience, key skills.
  • What you offer : contract type, career prospects, benefits.
  • How to apply : documents required, address, deadline.

Step 4: strike the right tone

Speak directly to the candidate (“you will be responsible for…”) and keep it simple. Avoid discriminatory wording related to age, gender or family situation, which has no place in a job advert.

Key takeaways
  • A clear advert is better than a long one.
  • Separate the essential from the desirable.
  • Say what you offer, not just what you require.

Step 5: choose the right channels

Job sites, LinkedIn, professional networks, schools, employee referrals: adapt your distribution to the profile you are looking for. A management position is not recruited through the same channels as an operational one.
