Managing a team

Going from 10 to 30 employees changes everything. What used to work informally becomes a source of confusion: who does what, who decides, who approves? Here are the habits to adopt to support growth without losing efficiency.

1. Clarify the organisation

Draw up an organisation chart, even a simple one, and write a job description for each role. Everyone should know who they report to and what their responsibilities are.

2. Learn to delegate

The business owner can no longer do everything. Identify the decisions that can be entrusted to middle managers, set a clear framework (objectives, limits, checkpoints) and accept that things will be done differently.

3. Develop managers

The best technical experts do not automatically become good managers. Support those you promote: management training, clear objectives, regular discussions with leadership.

4. Structure communication

  • A short, well-structured weekly team meeting.
  • A monthly review of results and priorities.
  • Regular one-to-one meetings with managers.

5. Preserve the company culture

Growth often dilutes the spirit of the early days. Formalise your values, take care of onboarding newcomers and involve long-standing employees in welcoming them.

Key takeaways
  • A clear organisation prevents tension.
  • Delegating means setting a framework, not letting go of everything.
  • Train your new managers before they run into difficulty.
